The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The buzz about The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team might be designing a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously flexible, letting players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
