As any prominent prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
